Come to the Burnaby | New West Walking Festival on May 12!

Walk30 Festival Poster

Burnaby and New Westminster are holding a Walking Festival to promote walking for better health, to re-think how we get around—and to celebrate the WALK30 Burnaby | New West Challenge. The Walking Festival is at Edmonds Community Centre on Saturday May 12, 10:00 – Noon. Enjoy free games, music, food and resources, with a focus on walking in our communities.

Use giant maps to illustrate your favourite walking routes, help create a walking song playlist, and learn about walking clubs and walking safety. Pick up resources from Fraser Health, ICBC and TransLink booths, and check out Parks, Culture and Recreation programs. Enter prize draws for recreation passes and gift cards for local retailers.

A music combo from New Westminster Senior Secondary will jazz things up, children can do crafts, play giant chess, checkers or Jenga, and people of all ages can compete in the three-legged race.

The Walk30 Burnaby | New West Challenge launched April 9 and wraps up May 11. More than 3200 community members and students have been walking to school, work, shop or play, aiming for at least 30 minutes a day for better health. Which City will win the inaugural “WALK30 Challenge Cup”? Come to the Festival to find out!

WALK30 Burnaby | New West partners include the City of Burnaby, City of New Westminster, Burnaby School District 41, New Westminster Schools, Fraser Health, New Westminster Walkers’ Caucus, ICBC and University of the Fraser Valley Kinesiology Program. Funding is provided in part by the Active Communities Grant from the Ministry of Health.

NWSS – Replacement Project Update

Contract Awarded for New School – Scheduled to Open September 2020

December 13, 2017 – The Ministry of Education and the New Westminster School District are thrilled to announce that Graham Design-Builders LP with KMBR Architects Planners Inc has been awarded the contract to design and build the new New Westminster Secondary School, scheduled to open in 2020.

In March 2017, three shortlisted teams were invited to respond to the Request for Proposals. Over the past few months, the Project Team has worked with the three shortlisted teams to discuss the Statement of Requirements, which was developed based on the Board of Education’s aspirational statements. After a thorough evaluation process, the Project Team has selected Graham with KMBR to move forward with the Project.

The School District signed and finalized the formal design-build contract with Graham and KMBR on December 9, 2017, and has been working with Graham and KMBR over the past few weeks to finalize the contract and further develop the design for our beautiful new school.

Upcoming Community Consultation

The community will have an opportunity to continue to provide input on the design of the new school. In early 2018, the School District will hold community meetings and invite comment on the proposed design and construction impact mitigation. Consultation will include a variety of opportunities to provide feedback online, in person and by mail. Details about meeting dates, locations and online opportunities will be provided in the coming weeks.
